20th Anniversary Celebration – 1994-2014

I cannot believe that 20 years ago in September we opened our new winery and brought in our first harvest! It certainly doesn’t feel like 20 years! Dawn and I want to celebrate this anniversary with you in Grand Style so we decided to throw a 20-Year Anniversary Celebration at the winery on October 11 from 1 to 4PM. We will have available over 30 wines to taste starting with our first vintage of 1994 and spanning our history. There will be plenty of tasty treats prepared by Master Chef Mark Ayers, raffle prizes, extra special pricing on ALL library wines, and much more. This is a not to miss event. Tickets are $45/person with advance reservations ($55 after Oct. 6th). Wine Gang members receive a $5 discount. IN ADDITION, for those who do not want to drive, we are providing limited chauffeured transportation from both the Mouth of the Valley (Crossroads Shopping Center) and Garland Park (parking lot). Transportation MUST be reserved in advance and space is limited ($20 per person). Tickets to this event are available on our website or by calling Danielle at 831-624-3800. Thanks for all your support over the past 20 years and we look forward to seeing you at the celebration!

2012 Grand Champion Release

Grand Champion is our best of the best and this is only the second time we have produced this fabulous blend! Our last vintage was the 2007. First we select only the finest vintages, then we hand select the best grapes from our vineyards and age the wine in 100% new French Oak barrels. Lastly we pick the best barrels from those lots to create this winning blend, which may vary in composition each year. Our 2012 consists of 38% Malbec, 37% Petit Sirah and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Upon pouring this wine you will immediately be struck by its dark garnet color. The nose explodes with rich berry and currant characters and a lovely balance of vanilla and oak. After a short time in the glass, the flavors explode with robust and lingering tastes of Marion berry, blackberry and dark chocolate. This wine is presented in 6-bottle wooden cases, branded with the Grand Champion logo and, although drinking beautifully now, it will last for many years to come. ORDER NOW!

Galante Vineyards Gift Cards

We are very pleased to introduce a new way of sharing Galante Wines with your friends and family: GALANTE GIFT CARDS. Sometimes it can be difficult to choose the wine that will be most appreciated and our Gift Cards take the guess work away. In addition, there are no shipping charges for you since the gift recipient can use their gift card for both wine purchases (and retail items) as well as shipping charges. The cards come in denominations of $25 and $50 and may be purchased and redeemed on-line as well as at the tasting room. If giving as gifts, we can mail the cards out directly for you at no charge with your personal note. ORDER ON-LINE or visit the Tasting Room in Carmel.

Wine of the Month – 2010 Ace High Malbec

Each month we select one wine to highlight with a very special offer. Our 2010 Ace High is September's Wine of the Month. Jack’s Saddlebag – To Pair or Not To Pair

I am so often asked about what food to pair with what wine and, as a chef as well as a winemaker, I certainly appreciate that perfectly paired dish with the appropriate wine. When I am preparing a meal and deciding on the wine(s) I do tend to follow these general principles:

1. Champagne works with anything salty (think Caviar).
2. Sauvignon Blanc is excellent with tart foods and sauces  (Sautéed Scallops with grapefruit)
3. Viognier is delightful with grilled seafood, foul and exotic spice  (Chicken with a curry peanut sauce)
4. Chardonnay prefers fatty fish and richer sauces (Shrimp Scampi with butter and garlic)
5. Rieslings, slightly sweet, enjoy sweet and spicy dishes (lots of Asian dishes)
6. Dry Rose pairs beautifully with cheese and cheese dishes (Croque Monsieur) – and is perfect with a plate of steamed mussels and pommes frites!
7. Pinot Noir is perfect with earthy dishes (Leak and Mushroom wood-fired Pizza)
8. Sangiovese doesn’t get any better than with Tuscan food (Papardelle with Veal Ragu)
9. Malbec is inspired by sweet-spicy barbeque sauces (Asian spare ribs)
10. Zinfandel pairs well with rich pates and mousses (Chicken liver pate)
11. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and most all Bordeaux blends love grilled red meats    (Cowboy cut Ribeye)
12. Sauternes of course are magically paired with Foie Gras.

More than the base food itself, wines should be paired with the spices, sauces, and flavors that accompany them. The main thing is to experiment with various dishes and wines, and above all, if you enjoy the wine with whatever you are eating, then it works! Have fun and be creative, don’t be afraid to experiment. Enjoy!

Cheers!

20-Year Anniversary Gala - A Not to Miss Event

It really doesn’t seem that long ago when I originally got the idea to build a winery at the ranch. It certainly doesn’t feel like 20 years! However, in early 1994 I broke ground on building my dream. The first phase of the winery was completed just in time for our harvest and we were off and running. Dawn and I want to celebrate this anniversary in grand style so we decided to throw a 20-Year Gala Anniversary Party at the winery on October 4 from 1 to 4PM. Not only will we be sampling 15 years of fine vintages, but there will also be food, music and great times. This is a not to miss event. Tickets will be $45/person with advance reservations ($25 for Wine Gang members). So, block out this day on your calendar. For advance reservations call 831-624-3800 or Email us.

Thanks for all your support over the past 20 years!

Jack’s Saddlebag – It’s All in the Approach

A Catholic Priest, a Baptist Preacher and a Rabbi all served as Chaplains to the students of Northern Michigan University at Marquette in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  They would get together two or three times a week for coffee and to talk shop.

One day, someone made the comment that preaching to people isn't really all that difficult; a real challenge would be to preach to a bear.

One thing led to another, and they decided to do an experiment.  They would all go out into the woods, find a bear, preach to it, and attempt to convert it to their religion..

Seven days later, they all came together to discuss their experiences.

Father Flannery, who had his arm in a sling, was on crutches, and had various bandages on his body and limbs, went first.  'Well,' he said, 'I went into the woods to find me a bear.  And when I found him, I began to read to him from the Catechism.  Well, that bear wanted nothing to do with me and began to slap me around.  So I quickly grabbed my holy water, sprinkled him and, Holy Mary Mother of God, he became as gentle as a lamb.  The Bishop is coming out next week to give him first communion and confirmation.'

Reverend Billy Bob the Baptist spoke next.  He was in a wheelchair, had one arm and both legs in casts, and had an IV drip.  In his best fire-and-brimstone oratory, he exclaimed, 'WELL, brothers, you KNOW that we Baptists don't sprinkle!  I went out and I FOUND me a bear.  And then I began to read to my bear from God's HOLY WORD!  But that bear wanted nothing to do with me.  So I took HOLD of him and we began to wrestle.  We wrestled down one hill, UP another and DOWN another until we came to a creek.  So I quickly DUNKED him and BAPTIZED his hairy soul.  And just like you said, he became as gentle as a lamb.  We spent the rest of the day praising Jesus.  Hallelujah!

The Priest and the Reverend both looked down at the Rabbi, who was lying in a hospital bed.  He was in a body cast and traction with IV's and monitors running in and out of him.  He was in really bad shape.  The Rabbi looked up and said: "Looking back on it, circumcision may not have been the best way to start.

Cheers!

Carmel’s FIRST Wine Tasting Room

It seems hard to believe that I opened the first Wine Tasting Room in Carmel 10 years ago this May! I truly can’t think of a better place I would like my business to be than in this wonderful town. Since we opened there are now 12 Tasting Rooms (Dawn’s Dream being the latest addition) and 5 more currently in review by the Planning Commission. Carmel has become such a desired destination for wineries that the City recently placed a moratorium on additional applications until their guidelines and policies can be reviewed and updated. This growth in Tasting Rooms has not only helped with the well-deserved recognition Monterey County has received as one on the world’s top 10 wine destinations, but it has led to a revitalized town which has benefited all. Just as my great-grandfather did when he founded the town of Carmel, with a vision of bringing commerce and community together, I am thrilled to have played a part in pioneering the renaissance in the town that has been sparked by the wine tasting community. If you haven’t had a chance to visit our town, or it has been awhile, we welcome you come on out and experience it for yourself.

Anniversary Special

You already know that we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary of opening our Tasting Room with a drop-in party on April 26th from 1-5pm. We understand that some of our great friends and customers cannot make it so we wanted you to have the opportunity to celebrate with us. For ONE DAY ONLY - on APRIL 26th - we are offering the wines we were serving when we opened in 2004 at their release prices! Here is the lineup…

2002 Blackjack Pasture Cabernet Sauvignon:  $60 (reg. $105)

2002 Red Rose Hill Cabernet Sauvignon:   $35 (reg. $90)

2003 Rancho Galante Cabernet Sauvignon:  $25 (reg. $65)

2002 Estate Merlot:   $35                               (reg. $90)

Please note, there are a VERY limited number of each of these Library wines available for sale so place your order early: On-Line Only. I want to personally thank you for all your support over the last 10 years and more. We look forward to our next decade in beautiful Carmel by-the-Sea.

February Wine of The Month

So stock up and take advantage of FREE SHIPPING on 6 or more bottles now through the end of the month. The February 2014 Wine Enthusiast Magazine says, “ This bottling wrestles Petite Sirah’s brawny, rustic personality into submission. The variety’s big tannins remain intact, yet the fruit is incredibly ripe with flavors of red cherries and blueberries. Drink it now and for the next six years.” 89 Points. High praise indeed for such a unique wine. So order yours now before they are gone for good!

5th Annual Blending Bash

Included in the cost of the event ($500) is a full case of your own one-of-a-kind blend with your custom label to add to your wine cellar. Additional cases are available if you wish. So, if you would like to be a Master Blender then come on out and try your hand. Oh, guests of the Master Blender who would like to assist or just have a great lunch and enjoy the seminar can purchase tickets for $100 each. These tickets do not include a case of wine. Jack’s Saddlebag – New Priest

A new Priest was quite nervous getting prepared to give his first sermon. Before going on he asked the Monsignor how he kept so calm at the pulpit. The wise man told the young priest that occasionally he substituted a glass of vodka for his water which helped calm his nerves. The young Priest took the wise Monsignor’s advice and the next Sunday, seeing the church packed with parishioners, he took a few sips of vodka before his sermon, which seemed to calm his nerves quite well. He continued to sip on the beverage during his quite enthusiastic sermon and felt pretty darn good about it all. Later that day he thanked the Monsignor for his advice and asked him how he thought it went. The Monsignor calmly informed the young Priest that all in all it was a good sermon, and he surely seemed confident, but he did have a few words of advice:

1. There are 10 Commandments, not 12,

2. There are 12 Disciples, not 10,

3. Jesus was consecrated, not constipated,

4. Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass,

5. David slew Goliath, he did not kick the ship out of him,

6. When David was hit by a rock and fell off his donkey, don’t say he was stoned off his ass,

7. And we NEVER, EVER refer to the Father, Son and Holy Ghost as Big Daddy, Junior and the Spook!

Cheers!

Jack’s Saddlebag – Man of Peace

This month the world lost a wonderful humanitarian in Nelson Mandela. Not only did he triumph against tremendous adversity and a 27-year imprisonment, but he taught the world a lesson in forgiveness through his profound compassion and generosity. His non-violent battle against apartheid and discrimination transformed not only a nation but influenced the world. Although his own light may have extinguished, the brightness that he has left will shine forever. We can only hope that his inspiration will help propel our societies to greater understanding and that one day the power of those who preach hatred and oppression will be subdued by the values and goodness of the majority of human beings who strive to live in harmony and peace. May this holiday season bring you all joy, health and happiness.

Cheers!

Blending Fun 2013
The report from this years Blending Bash is in – and man was it a lot of fun! After a lavish lunch (prepared by Chef Jack and Crew) and ample libation, our merry group of budding winemakers took to their pipettes and flasks and began their blending magic. After about an hour or so of mixing and tasting, all had decided on their one blend that was just right. Then came the blind tasting competition and the winner ended up being a newcomer to our blending group – Carl Schumaker. His prize, other than being the envy of the other winemakers and bragging rights for decades to come – an incredible magnum of 1999 Blackjack Pasture Cabernet Sauvignon!

Jack’s Saddlebag – A Happy Wife is a Happy Life
It is never a good idea to be sassy with your wife – they never seem to forget and they will eventually get you back as this poor fellow quickly found out… A police officer pulled over a speeding car. The officer said, “I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir.” The driver replied, “Goodness, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60; perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating.”
Not looking up from her knitting the wife said: “Now don't be silly, dear, you know that this car doesn't have cruise control.” As the officer pulled out his ticket pad the driver looked over at his wife and growled,
”Can't you please keep your mouth shut for once!?” The wife smiled demurely and said, “Well dear, you should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did or your speed would have been higher.”
As the officer made out a second ticket for the illegal radar detector, the man glowered at his wife and mumbled through clenched teeth,
”Woman, can't you keep your mouth shut?”
The officer frowned and said, “And I notice that you're not wearing your seat belt, sir. That's an automatic $75 fine.”

The driver replied, “Yeah, well, you see, officer, I had it on, but I took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket.”
His wife promptly said, “Now, dear, you know very well that you didn't have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you're driving.”
And as the police officer was writing out the third ticket, the driver turned to his wife and barked, “WILL YOU PLEASE BE QUIET??” The officer looked over at the woman sympathetically and asked, “Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma'am?” She quietly replied, “Only when he's been drinking.”

Cheers!

Back to Blackjack
IT IS FINALLY HERE! Our 2007 Blackjack Pasture Cabernet Sauvignon – and let me tell you, it was worth the wait. We all know that the 2007 vintage was one of the finest in the last 15 years, and our 2007 Blackjack really stands up to all the hype. These cabernet grapes were picked at a perfect 24.5 degrees brix on a beautiful late fall day (October 25, 2007). The crop load was only about 2 tons per acre, which led to intensely rich flavors. As usual, we barrel aged our Blackjack in all new French Oak for 12 months and then let time do its thing for 5 years in the bottle (some things just get way better with age)! Now for the bad news – we only made 260 cases of this robust wine and have pre-subscribed about 100 of them (of course we have reserved a bunch for our Wine Gang members). This will be the last Blackjack Pasture available until our 2012 vintage is released so we encourage you to stock up your cellars. To introduce this stellar vintage we are offering free shipping on 6 bottles or more of Blackjack through our website for a very limited time. So enjoy and remember to Always Drink Upstream From The Herd!!

Jack’s Saddlebag – Man’s Best Friend
A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: “Talking Dog For Sale.”
He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.
'You talk?' he asks.
'Yep,' the Lab replies.
After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says 'So, what's your story?'
The Lab looks up and says, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I joined the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running, but the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.'
He continued, 'I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.'
The guy is amazed with this incredible dog and he goes back in and asks the owner how much he wants for the animal.
'Ten bucks,' the owner says.
'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?' replies the man.
'Because he's a bull-shitter. He's never been out of the yard!'

Cheers!

Jack’s Saddlebag – Happy Trails Old Friend
We are sad to announce that our wonderful bull, Victor, passed away peacefully in his sleep the other day. Victor was a fixture at the ranch for the past 18 years. We originally purchased Victor at the Cow Palace in San Francisco where he was crowned the Grand Champion when he was only 2 years old. For those of you who knew Victor, he was a gentle giant. He weighed in at over 2,500 pounds and loved to be scratched, especially behind the ears. Bulls like Victor usually have a life span of 10 to 12 years, but life is good for a bull at Rancho Galante! He spent his twilight years in retirement, hanging around the ranch house or by the pond – pretty much having his run of the place. As he aged and it was harder for him to get around, so we brought him grain and treats along with his medications for arthritis. We will surely miss him but we know that he is now in that big pasture in the sky. Happy Trails old friend.

Cheers!
