Our History

A Legacy of Frontier Spirit and Bold Ventures

Saddle up and take a ride through history with the Galante Family—a legacy rooted deep in the rugged beauty of Monterey County. This tale begins with a true pioneer, James Frank Devendorf, the visionary founder of Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1900 and creator of the iconic Highlands Inn. His dream of a community built around nature, art, and connection lives on in the generations that followed.

In 1969, Jack Galante’s parents laid claim to a 700-acre cattle ranch in the sun-drenched hills of Carmel Valley. It was here that young Jack was drawn to the land, cultivating a love for agriculture, ranching, and the timeless cowboy lifestyle that still defines Galante Family Winery today.

While continuing to run their working cattle ranch, the Galantes planted their first wine grapes in 1983, with a focus on the noble Cabernet Sauvignon. In true frontier fashion, Jack built a winery in 1994, crafting ultra-premium estate wines from the very soil he grew up on. It was the perfect union of Western grit and winemaking passion.

Though the original ranch was sold in 2020, Jack’s connection to the land remains unshaken. He continues to source grapes from those historic vines as well as select vineyards that he overseas across California, staying true to the bold and adventurous spirit that defines Galante wines.

In 2004, Jack tipped his hat to tradition and innovation by opening the first wine tasting room in Carmel-by-the-Sea—over a century after his great-grandfather founded the town. Today, Carmel stands proud as one of the top wine tasting destinations in the country, and Galante remains at the heart of it all.

So here’s to the trailblazers, the dreamers, and the doers. To a family that turned wild country into a world-class vineyard. And to a wine that captures the spirit of the West—one bold, beautiful bottle at a time.
